Fold Away Literacy Unit - Using a tri-fold poster board makes storing a display without destroying it much easier. This one was created based on the author of the Magic School Bus, Joanna Cole. It can be used for centers. Mine is a thematic unit based around one of the books from the series, The Magic School Bus At The Waterworks. Each folder is filled with an activity for a different subject: math, science, writing, and reading comprehension.
In the center of the board I included biographical information about the author, a list of other books she has written, and a description of the four centers. The folders are removable, via Velcro. Directions for the activities are on each folder.
The science activity was hands-on and required some additional supplies. While it could have been done as a center, I choose to do it whole group. Students simulated part of the water cleaning process by straining dirt, leaves, and rocks from water.
The math center is a fun game that I designed and illustrated based on the water process from the book. Students shrank into raindrops and went through the water cleaning process, like in the story. The raindrop moving pieces are varying colors of flattened marbles. Students had to answer math questions to move to the next step. Any review questions can be used, from any subject. I choose to introduce this game at small group. 5th graders exclaimed "This is the best game EVER!" I could tell that the effort was worth the prize.
File-Folder Games Are Great!
The ideas here can be adapted to meet so many different types of objectives.
